Pothos can trail or climb — both look good, they are just different looks. What changes is the foliage: given something to climb, pothos matures as it grows upward and puts out noticeably larger leaves than it does trailing from a shelf. A trellis is what gives it that support — weave the vines through the openings as they grow, or tuck and secure them where you want more direction.
